Part #2: Process & Providers
In the last post, we introduced egg freezing and explained its benefits.
Here, we will cover the egg freezing process and some egg freezing centres that are popular among Singaporeans.
Process of egg freezing
The whole process takes about 14 days. Patients can make their travel arrangements based on the following process:
Day 1: On the 1st or 2nd day of her menstrual cycle, patient undergoes a basic blood test and ultrasound scan to ensure no cysts/fibroids in the uterus before the commencement of the treatment
Day 2-5: Commencement of treatment (injection) to stimulate egg production - patient should be at her 2nd or 3rd day of the menstrual cycle
Day 6: Return to the egg freezing centre for a follow-up scan to check the development of eggs
Day 10: Return to egg freezing centre for a follow-up scan to check on the development of eggs. Once eggs have reached optimal size, medication to release the eggs will be administered
Day 12 or 13: Patient is scheduled for egg retrieval
Day 14: Return to Singapore
Where to get it done?
As seen in the Straits Times, more professional women in their mid-30s to early 40s are opting for the egg freezing procedure, which is not permitted in Singapore. One of the more popular choices for women in Singapore are the fertility centres in Kuala Lumpur (KL) due to their close proximity (only 1 hour by plane from Singapore).
Based on Ulink’s former clients, the more popular centres are:
Sunfert is Malaysia’s fastest-growing fertility centre located in Kuala Lumpur. Since opening in November 2009, they have treated more than 2,000 couples with Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) with a success rate of over 50%.
Unlike other fertility centres that are owned by large corporations, Sunfert is self-owned, which allows them the flexibility to offer better and reasonable prices together with a less hectic environment for the treatment process.

Established in 2008, Tropicana Medical Centre is a full fledge medical centre owned by the Thomson Medical Group in Singapore. This 205 bed medical centre is fully-equipped with innovative technology and offers comprehensive medical care through world class facilities.
Editor's note: feedback from former Ulink clients regarding Tropicana Medical Centre has been very poor. Patients considering this facility are strongly advised to do thorough due diligence, including touring the centre and speaking to their fertility doctor.
What is the extraction process like?
On day 12 or 13 from the egg stimulation treatment, the woman’s eggs would be adequately matured to be extracted. The eggs are removed with a needle placed through the vagina under ultrasound guidance. This 15-20 minute day case procedure done under sedation and patients have experienced a small degree of pain. Once extracted, the eggs are immediately frozen and stored.
Are the centres in KL of top medical standards?
Both Sunfert and Tropicana Medical Centre are registered with the Malaysian Ministry of Health, and the latter is accredited by the The Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH), SGS, ISO9001, and The Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC) by the Fertility Society of Australia.
