What to expect during IVF?
IVF is a lengthy process that usually takes 2 months. It comprises a series of tests, short hormonal therapies and a few minor surgical procedures.
Fortunately, patients are not required to stay in hospital during this period.
What kind of tests are involved?
What kind of hormonal therapies are involved?
Hormonal therapies are specific to women, where it is necessary to hyper-stimulate their ovaries to increase the number of eggs produced. This stimulation typically involves the injection of the following hormones:
Usually stimulation begins in the second half of a patient's menstrual cycle, and will continue for about 14 to 20 days1.
It is perfectly common to experience a moderate amount of discomfort because of the injections. However, if you experience more discomfort please inform your doctor.
What are the minor surgical procedures?
For women, egg collection and embryo transfer are the two minor surgeries that will occur.

For men, if there is an obstruction of the reproduction tract, testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) maybe required (70% of obstruction cases2)

What happens after embryo transfer?
Usually the patient will be given daily hormonal support (progesterone or HCG) to maintain the lining of the uterus. It is important that the administration of the hormonal support is strictly adhered to as it enhances the chances of the embryos implanting.

How much does IVF in Singapore typically costs?
All costs are in Singapore dollars.
Please note: These costs are estimates only. IVF treatment varies according to the complexity of treatment.
What is the patient journey usually like?
Normally a patient's journey will be as follows:
|1.||Consultations and screenings to determine treatment plan|
|2.||Waiting for menses|
|3.||Calling the clinic at the start of menses|
|4.||Start of treatment|
|10.||Review of treatment plan when pregnancy doesn't occur|
Failures to become pregnant are usually due to a multitude of factors, and even the best specialists will not be able to help their patients achieve pregnancy all the time. That is why IVF is very much an iterative process and patients often have different experiences:
